32 ( +1 | -1 ) ...I do boxing as a hobby (as well as chess, of course), and I like this idea. Imagine that most kids who defeat opponents over the board often get the humbling response, "Yeah, but I could still beat you up and take your lunch money."
119 ( +1 | -1 ) boxing and chessThere does seem to be a relationship, doesn't there? (more for otb chess than correspondence).
There is a long time to train, study, prepare - and you can have seconds or assitants. But in the end, you have to get in the ring and fight it out. No help, no aids, just you and the opponent. And like in chess, when the punches start flying, the theory goes by the boards.
I think the boxing trainers are a little more sophisticated than chess trainers. If you are going to box a small fast fighter, they will spar you against small fast fighters.
Spassky, in preparing for his match against Fisher, took a training match against Karpov. I thought - "what could be more different in style than Fisher and Karpov?"
I think Spassky should have talked to a russian boxing coach rather than a russian chess coach.
It takes a little sophisticiation on the part of the observer to appreciate boxing (that and turning off the sound). There's so much more to it than people know. I just wish that the chiefs were more protective of the fighters (like wearing headgear like the amateurs do). I hate to see people hurt.
25 ( +1 | -1 ) I comparechess to tennis, by the use of initiative... Though tennis is more changing than chess in terms of initiative (comparing high level of tennis vs high level of chess, of course... i know at my rating initiative comes and goes easily)
46 ( +1 | -1 ) I Recall......a MAD magazine bit about extreme sports such as Phonebooth Croquet and Underwater Bowling. The extreme chess was played with lit sticks of dynamite! I think that would be more entertaining. Talk about timing out! (Commentator: "and here we are at move 27, it looks like Black is in a bit of time trouble...he makes a move....BUT TOO LATE! The board has been completely blown apart! Now White emerges from behind his berm to take the prize!)
13 ( +1 | -1 ) Let me just say...What Andy Kaufman said: I can beat any girl at this sport. Anyone who thinks different should prove it to me.
30 ( +1 | -1 ) It doesnt' seem very fairThere are some young kids these days who could whip my butt at chess, but I would knock them out. In general, I think I would do good at this sport. I'm not a very bad chess player and I'm a pretty big guy. I would actually be willing to give this a try.
