Bobby headed home? I'm frankly shocked that there has been no mention of it here, so I offer this bit of information for those among you still enthralled with the "mystery" of Bobby Fischer.

He was arrested on Tuesday at Japan's Narita airport as he attempted to board a flight for the Philippines on suspicion of holding an invalid passport. He's been living in Japan for a few years now, but it seems that the authorities have no idea how he got there, and are now planning to deport him to the US. He has been criminally charged here of violating UN sanctions against Yugolavia in connection with his 1992 Fischer-Spassky match.

Coming soon to an airport near you?

That is amazing! I hope they do some follow ups on this story. I think Fischer has some serious mental problems though at this point, I've heard his radio show before and he literally sounds insane. Can you imagine an impromptu chess match between say Kasparov and Fischer while he's in jail?

Thanks bucklehead for bringing this to everyone's attention! No, I hadn't read anything of this before your post. It's interesting to hear some facts aside from all the semi-mystical claptrap people talk about the man, and have it confirmed for one thing that he *was* in fact in Japan!

As groove says, I really hope they follow-up. It would be interesting to see what happens.
