I was playing since 1968, but Bobby's match is also what started me to find out about US Chess Federation and play my first tournament then in 1972. I wonder how many of us did come to Chess or tournament play because of him? In the USA, it made a Golden Age of Chess here for the next decade following. Our USCF membership hit its highest ever, until that time. By the late 1980's chess was dwindling some in the Midwestern USA and some of our local Swiss tournaments might only bring 8 to 12 players at times. At most 22. But back in the early 70's, I recall playing in a Class D section that had almost that many in just that one class! What a great time for Chess here~! Finally, perhaps the late 90's, American Chess finally reached again the number of USCF members that were seen when Bobby was playing, and surpassed it. But if not for him, and the publicity he generated for the game during the 1972 match ... I don't think that 2nd period of popularity would ever have happened either, imo. Thanks to him, my hobby game became a lifetime pursuit for me too.

He wrote a column in "Boy's Life," the U.S. Boy Scout magazine, in the late 1960's that was my first window into the world of tournament chess. Though I had played since I was 5, not until I glimpsed that world throuigh Bobby's words and images did I think about playing "seriously."

But then I've been missing it these 35 years. You had to admire what he achieved over the board. And I've always thought highly of the sportmanship he showed in his book of Memorable Games. The annotations and comments were understandable to players from perhaps 1200 and up, and he usually either analyzed one of his own games with a clear strategic plan capped by some cute tactics or a game by a strong junior player of the time like Rogoff. BTW, my best wishes also go out to my friend Miyoko Watai, Fischer's longtime companion. Watai-sama was formerly secretary of the Japan Chess Association as well as a good and kind friend.

Anand was interested but had not been able to schedule the match. Kasparov was busy with politics. The match was to take place in India and be possibly a Fischer Random event. The random style would level the field in my opinion. In other words, make up for RJF's lack of recent opening knowledge/updates. Would of been an interesting venue.
