Who am I ? I am a fairly inexperienced 24 year old player. I am delighted to have been accepted into a major Tournament. My excitement is slightly dulled when I look at who my first six opponents will be, I am to play Alekhine, Capablanca, Euwe, Botvinnik, Reshevsky and Flohr. This means I have to play the reigning World Champion, two former World Champions, one future World Champion and two Super Grandmasters.

I score 5.5 out of 6

Who am I ?

Hmmm I wanted to say Let me be the first to bludnder into this. But then think i got it. Thinking something like this: Tal? Sounds like a Tal thing to do! Ah but no, too obvious. Who could do a Tal like result, hhhh Fischer! No wait, he didnt play those right? So maybe tthy both a bit young too ?! Ohhhhh! [This is fun :)]
So I'll wait and see. Maybe if you know and dont want to give it away you might post a couple "Nots?" . I hope its not TAL ! :)

I will venture Paul Keres, a noted CC player as well, if I'm not mistaken.

I will also venture... If it IS Keres, we must be talking about the 1938 AVRO tournament in Holland. (Fine took second, ahead of the six mentioned above.)

what ??? I thought it was the Bar-B-Que tournament at Bronsteins house !?:) With Kere, Fine and well, I guess it cant be Reshevshky, will someone give me a Kashdan ?

My guess I'll take a stab at this and say Vassily Smyslov.
fmgaijin ♡ 29 ( +1 | -1 )
Reuben Fine Avro 1938, only player to win 5 in the event (actually 6, 'cause he won one in the second half, too). Keres (undefeated, but only 3 wins, while Fine had 3 losses to go with his 6 wins) and Fine tied for first with 8.5. The conditions at the event favored the younger, more resilient players.

Reuben Fine it is guys, crazy isn't it, he can smash all the leading players of his age and yet couldn't even become national champion of the US of A !!

It was indeed the 1938 AVRO tournament held in the Netherlands (Holland)

Capablanca was the one to escape with a lucky draw......

A big well done to john-wr and fmgaijin, they were good tries, the rest of you.

Bah I would have gotten it (assuming of course I took the time to read the crosstable correctly). Good thread, BTW.
